The Claremont Colleges Emergency Medical Service strives to provide quick, reliable emergency care to the students, faculty, and staff of the Claremont Colleges. Our program will provide immediate support before off-campus emergency professionals can arrive at the site of emergency. We encourage and foster empathy, professionalism, a strong work-ethic and tenacity in all our Emergency Medical Technicians. Empathy through this program will cultivate a campus culture of mutual care and support. The professionalism that characterizes the program will allow student employees to transfer the skills practiced through their training and response work into their long-term careers as well as professional-level campus care. The values of a strong work-ethic and tenacity will allow our workers to demonstrate their commitment to providing help to those in need and their persistence in facing the numerous challenges that undoubtedly come with such a pressure industry.
The Claremont Colleges EMS aims to provide students at the Claremont Colleges with the ability to render proficient and compassionate prehospital Basic Life Support (BLS) care at the scene of an emergency. Upon completion of the program, student EMT’s will be equipped with a technical understanding of the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) components of prehospital emergency medical care.
Cognitive Objective: Students in the Claremont Colleges EMS will be prepared to assess signs and symptoms of illness or traumatic injury during a medical emergency on campus.
Psychomotor Objective: Students will be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of medical procedures relevant to their assessment.
Affective Objective: The program aims to develop compassionate and skilled professionals who exemplify the Claremont Colleges EMS’s core values: tenacity, hard work, professionalism, and empathy.
As vital a service as EMSs play in the world, there is always room for improvement. The average response time to a call is around seven minutes. While that is a statistic the medical world should be proud of, unfortunately even that can be too late in certain situations. Our goal is to provide the most immediate response, and having an EMS on campus can ensure the quickest possible care and reduce the risk of life as much as possible.
In the future, this local program can be developed into a one that can be generalized and easily applied to different college contexts. The training materials, media and marketing, organization structure, and support services can be used as outlines for other schools that desire to start their own EMT programs and make their campuses a safer environment. The Claremont Colleges EMS could even expand to provide a functioning role for the communities around the colleges by providing on-call medical support for large events or higher-risk activities.
Furthermore, we envision ourselves as becoming the premier launch pad for Claremont Colleges students looking to pursue medical careers. Whether they want to continue down the First Responder path or venture into another field of medicine, obtaining such hands-on and real world experience during one’s undergraduate years can not only jumpstart a students medical education, but can also allow a student to test out the intense world of medicine before further investing in the field.
